Random Thoughts On Veterinary Magazines

Posted by Dean Scott in Untagged

Dean Scott
I didn’t quite know what to call this article.  It was supposed to be about advertising at first, because my brain loves playing with the wording and contradictions of advertising.  Advertising seems to make the assumption that those it is aimed at are stupid and that aggravates me.  However, as usual with my collection of thoughts, it really didn’t fit that categorization.  So this is ending up truly being about random thoughts I had regarding images seen in our regular veterinary magazines.  I’m not sure if they’re even funny.  But bear with me.  As you always do.
This first one is from an article I’ve had in my file (I was going to say drawer, but then it sounded as if I had them down my pants) for the longest time because it’s one of those titles that you just want to memorize and rattle off in an authoritative fashion at some conference or evening get-together, where people will “ooooooo….” and “aaaahhhh….”.

The first time you read it the words are so slippery that your brain can’t hold on to them.  When I finally broke it down, all I could think was there had to be some way they could have simplified the article title.  The people who did this study are just showing off.  And I guess that’s why it struck me.  Because it seems like on one end of the spectrum we are told to simplify our instructions and explanations to owners and on the other end be able to read and engage on a wholly different level.  And maintain our sanity.
This next image has been a magnet on our clinic’s refrigerator for a number of years.

91% of pet owners expect a nutrition recommendation, it says.  And my brain always adds, “Right.  And 85% of them won’t take your recommendations.  And 20% of that 85% will argue vehemently with you.”
This next image I just want you to ponder for a moment.  I want you to ask yourself what article was this image used for.  Here’s the thing.  You won’t be able to figure it out without me telling you.  Don’t skip ahead.  See if you know the answer before I give it.

New Material Posted on FunnyVet.com!

Posted by Administrator in Untagged

After some technical difficulties, we were finally able to upload a whole mess of new, fun stuff on FunnyVet!  I wanted to post this on the blog for both new and veteran viewers, as there truly was, A LOT! of new material.
In no particular order we have a new vet school song parody "Blowin' In the Wind", new client comments, new veterinary truisms, as well as a new section under the truisms on the same page which we are calling "Things Said In A Veterinary Clinic" (we invite one and all to add their favorite phrases that can only be heard in a veterinary setting), and five new forum articles.  The forum articles cover my analyses of the 2012 Reader's Digest article "50 Secrets Your Vet Won't Tell You", the movies that have veterinarians or veterinary medicine as the primary character in Dr. Dolittle and Pet Sematary 2 (yes, you heard that right, Pet Sematary......2!  It's a classic!), my necropsy of the humanely euthanized t.v. show "Animal Practice", and an odd little thing I was sent titled "Reasons to Date Your Veterinarian".  So.....lots of stuff to keep you occupied.  We hope you enjoy!  As usual, I take time off in January to refresh my creative batteries.  They're only tiny AAA batteries and I burn through them rather quickly.  In the mean-time, please feel free to send me your own ideas, stories, cartoon notions, etc. for inclusion on the site!  We always give credit where credit is due.  And if you're not aware, I have started epublishing and you can find my books at the internet version of Barnes & Noble, as well as on my smashwords author page.  These include the first two (of four) volumes of my Incomplete Dog Book - Nothing You Ever Wanted To Know About Dogs, which got its first glowing review just recently.  Yay!
Thanks again for all of your support and interest throughout the year!  I hope to bring you even more of the funny in the upcoming new year!
