Bo the First Dog's First 100 Days

Bo, President Barack Obama’s pick as First Dog, has had an eventful first 100 days in his new position.  In what some consider a brilliant move, President Obama, in picking a Portuguese Waterdog, has virtually clinched the Portuguese-American voting block.  It has also been pointed out that choosing a black and white dog is very inclusive.

Senator and Mrs. Kennedy presented him to Sasha and Malia in April as a gift, including what they said was his favorite plaything, a George W. Bush squeekie chew toy.

The now 9-month-old has been described as easy-going, adaptable, and “loves everybody”.  In a rare show of bipartisianship, Bo showed restraint in not re-marking all of Barney’s, the former Bush First Dog’s, territory.  “In all honesty,” Press Secretary Robert Gibbs stated, “he would have been hard-pressed to do so anyway, since Barney had really trashed the White House furniture and carpeting.”

Dubbed “The Doggie Czar”, the Secret Service’s code-name, he has really hit the ground running.  He has already sniffed butts with the dogs of many heads-of-state, including Queen Elizabeth’s Corgis.  The press corps was enthusiastic in their first meetings with him, though Bo felt the need to correct some when microphones were rudely shoved in his face.  “That’s FOX News for you, though.  You have to expect it,” an anonymous source said.  He has already officiated at the Westminster Dog Show and though he found the Standard Poodle, Yes, “delectable”, he was reported to be “tail-waggingly pleased” with the victory going to Stump, the Sussex Spaniel.

Of course, Bo is not without his critics.  Lush Rimbaugh, president of the Conservative Action Team (CAT), brought up some of the controversy at a recent press conference.  “How did his parents, natives of Portugal, get into the United States?  That has not been answered.  Has anyone seen his original health certificate?  I think the American public has a right to know why it seems his date of birth and birthplace were written in different ink!  What are they trying to hide?  It seems a slap in the face that this dog purportedly comes from President George W. Bush’s great home state of Texas!  We want answers!”

Other upcoming hurdles include his stance on dog food manufacturers using ingredients from China and whether he will show leadership on the issue of neutering.  Certainly, despite his admirers or detractors, one thing is certain.  The next seven-and-a-half years should prove eventful for this once-unknown Portuguese Waterdog.
